BA Early Childhood Studies
About this course
Early childhood studies is the academic study of children from birth to around eight years, concerned with how they develop physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially, and with the environments, relationships, and services that support their wellbeing. It draws on developmental psychology, education theory, sociology, health, and law to provide a multidisciplinary understanding of early childhood, recognising that the experiences of the earliest years have profound and lasting effects on children's future outcomes. At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time BA develops the knowledge, practical skills, and critical insight needed to shape young lives. The course focuses on the development, education, and wellbeing of babies and young children, preparing you for a rewarding career in early years education, family support, child development services, and related fields. You will study child development theory, early years pedagogy, safeguarding and child protection, family support, play, language, and the policy contexts of children's services in England and internationally. Entry typically requires around 104 UCAS tariff points. Graduates work in nurseries, children's centres, schools, family support services, health visiting, children's social care, and local government. Many continue to postgraduate study or professional qualifications in early years education, social work, speech and language therapy, or educational psychology. The degree also provides a strong foundation for those wishing to pursue qualified teacher status in the early years or primary sector with additional training.
