MA Celtic & Anglo-Saxon Studies and Spanish & Latin American Studies
About this course
Celtic and Anglo-Saxon studies with Spanish and Latin American studies is an unusual but intellectually compelling combination, bringing together the study of early medieval cultures and languages of the British Isles and Scandinavia with one of the world's most widely spoken modern languages and its associated cultural traditions. Celtic studies engages with the languages, literature, history and culture of the Celtic peoples across Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the medieval continent. Anglo-Saxon studies explores the Old English language and the rich literary, historical and artistic culture of early medieval England. Spanish and Latin American studies adds a contemporary global dimension, providing linguistic competence and cultural knowledge across Spain and the diverse societies of Latin America. At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time programme provides a distinctive education that spans medieval European culture and contemporary Latin American and Spanish-speaking worlds. You will engage with the lives and legacy of Celtic, Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian peoples in their European historical context, while simultaneously developing your Spanish language skills and your understanding of the cultures, histories and contemporary dynamics of the Spanish-speaking world. With a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, this is a demanding and intellectually adventurous degree. Graduates from this kind of programme work in the arts, broadcasting, heritage management, international business, education, the diplomatic service, tourism and cultural organisations. The combination of deep historical and philological knowledge with modern language competence and cultural awareness gives graduates a distinctive profile that is valued in organisations working across European cultural heritage and international Spanish-speaking contexts. Postgraduate study in Celtic studies, medieval languages, Spanish studies or Latin American history is a natural next step.
