BSc Business Economics
About this course
Business economics sits between traditional economics and the practical world of business, applying economic thinking to the decisions, structures, and performance of firms and industries. While pure economics can be highly mathematical, business economics emphasises the application of economic analysis to real commercial and organisational challenges, making it accessible to students who want the insights of economic thinking without specialising primarily in mathematical modelling. It develops analytical and numerical skills through engagement with modern business tools and techniques, producing graduates who can interpret economic data, evaluate market conditions, and contribute to strategic decision-making. At Queen's University Belfast, this full-time, three-year degree combines the study of economics with practical business insights, equipping you to tackle real-world challenges across a range of commercial and organisational contexts. You will develop an understanding of how markets work, how firms compete and set prices, how macroeconomic conditions shape business decisions, and how economic data can be collected, interpreted, and used. The programme develops your analytical and quantitative abilities through hands-on engagement with data and business problems, and you will graduate with both the economic thinking and the practical skills that employers across business, finance, and government are looking for. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Business economics graduates are well placed across a wide range of careers. Financial services, management consultancy, corporate finance, economic research, market analysis, business development, and public sector economic roles are all common destinations. The combination of economic analysis and business understanding is particularly valued in organisations that need graduates who can bridge the gap between data and decision-making. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in economics, finance, business administration, or data science, while others move directly into graduate programmes in business and financial services.
