About this course

British Sign Language is the first or preferred language of many Deaf people in the UK, and its study as an academic subject combines linguistic analysis with a deep engagement with Deaf culture, history, and community. Applied language studies broadens this foundation to examine how language functions in social, educational, and professional contexts, drawing on linguistics, sociolinguistics, and language teaching methodology. Together they give you both high-level proficiency in BSL and a rigorous analytical understanding of language as a human and social phenomenon. At Heriot-Watt University, which is internationally recognised for its work in BSL and interpreting, this four-year full-time programme takes you from developing BSL proficiency through to advanced language use, while simultaneously building your theoretical understanding of linguistics and communication. Heriot-Watt has the only dedicated sign language interpreting programme in Scotland, and the department has research strength that feeds directly into teaching. You will study the structure and grammar of BSL, the sociolinguistics of Deaf communities, language acquisition, and the principles that underpin professional language mediation in a range of contexts. Graduates of this programme are well prepared for careers in BSL interpreting, Deaf education, speech and language support, community work with Deaf people, and language policy. Many graduates go on to professional qualification in BSL or English interpreting, and Heriot-Watt's reputation in this field is a significant asset in that process. Roles in broadcasting (where BSL interpreting is increasingly visible), healthcare interpretation, social work, and communications are also open to graduates. Postgraduate study in linguistics, interpreting studies, or Deaf studies is a further direction for those wishing to pursue research or advanced professional practice.
