BSc Biology [with Placement Year]
About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its diversity, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the dynamics of entire ecosystems. It is a discipline of extraordinary breadth, encompassing the chemistry of living systems, the genetics of inheritance and evolution, the physiology of organisms, the ecology of populations, and the global processes that sustain the biosphere. At a time when humanity faces profound challenges related to biodiversity loss, climate change, food security, disease, and the manipulation of genetic material, biological knowledge has never been more important. At Anglia Ruskin University, this four-year programme includes a placement year, giving you the opportunity to work in a professional scientific context during your degree. You will study across the breadth of biology, from cell and molecular biology, genetics, evolution, and bioinformatics to plants, microbes, biotechnology, whole organisms, and field ecology. This range ensures that you develop both laboratory skills and fieldwork competencies, making you versatile as a scientist. You will learn to evaluate evidence, design experiments, interpret data, and communicate scientific findings, building the practical and intellectual capabilities that the biological sciences demand. Graduates go on to careers in research, environmental science, conservation, healthcare and biomedical science, agriculture and food science, public health, science communication, and education. The placement year provides a significant advantage in the graduate job market, giving you direct professional experience and the opportunity to build networks in your chosen area of the field. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study at Master's or PhD level, either to specialise in a particular area of biology or to move into applied science and research roles that require higher-level qualifications.
