BSc Biology with Foundation Year
About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its forms, from the molecular mechanisms that power individual cells to the ecological relationships that sustain entire biomes. It encompasses genetics, evolution, physiology, biochemistry, ecology, microbiology and cell biology, and it underpins everything from medicine and agriculture to conservation and biotechnology. Studying biology develops your ability to think scientifically, to design and interpret experiments, and to engage with the evidence base that drives progress in the life sciences. At the University of Derby, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, offering a rich combination of academic and practical experience. The foundation year provides the scientific and mathematical preparation needed for degree-level biology. Through the degree, you will study the full range of biological disciplines, from molecular and cell biology through physiology and genetics to ecology and environmental biology, developing laboratory skills and field techniques alongside theoretical understanding. The sandwich year, year abroad and work placement give you professional experience across different biological contexts, from research laboratories to conservation organisations, and broaden your perspective on the practice of biology internationally. Biology graduates pursue careers in biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, environmental and conservation science, agriculture, food science, public health, education, science communication and policy. The analytical and laboratory skills developed transfer into a wide range of sectors beyond the pure life sciences. Further study at master's or doctoral level in biology, ecology, genetics, biochemistry, biomedical science or a related field is the common route for those drawn to research or specialist scientific careers.
