About this course

Biochemistry sits at the meeting point of chemistry and biology, using the tools and methods of chemistry to investigate the molecules that make life work. Proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids and the metabolic pathways that connect them are the subject matter of biochemistry, and understanding how these molecules function, interact and go wrong when disease strikes is central to modern medicine, biotechnology and drug development. At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time degree is explicitly oriented toward preparing graduates for the evolving demands of the workplace, with digital and AI literacy embedded across the curriculum alongside core scientific training. You will study the structure and function of biological macromolecules, enzyme kinetics, metabolic regulation, molecular biology, cell signalling and the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that control gene expression. Practical laboratory work is central to the degree, developing your ability to design experiments, use analytical instruments, interpret data and communicate scientific findings clearly. Surrey has established strengths in life sciences research, and you will benefit from exposure to current research questions and the techniques used to address them. A typical entry tariff of around 120 points is expected for this programme. Biochemistry graduates are in high demand across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, working in drug discovery, clinical research, quality control, regulatory affairs and manufacturing. The NHS, public health organisations and academic research institutions also draw regularly on biochemists. Many graduates progress to postgraduate study including master's programmes in bioscience, biomedical research or a clinical profession, and a significant number go on to doctoral research, contributing directly to advances in medicine and the life sciences.
