Biochemistry sits at the intersection of biology and chemistry, and it asks one of the most fundamental questions in science: how does life work at the molecular level? The discipline examines the chemical processes that sustain living organisms, from the structure of proteins and nucleic acids to the cascades of enzymatic reactions that generate energy, build cellular structures, transmit signals, and regulate gene expression. Understanding biochemistry means understanding the molecular basis of health and disease, and it is the foundation on which much of modern medicine, drug discovery, and biotechnology is built. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this three-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement experience, giving it a strong professional dimension alongside the academic core. You will study biochemistry from its foundations in organic chemistry and cell biology through to advanced topics in molecular biology, structural biochemistry, metabolic regulation, and biotechnology. Laboratory work is central throughout, developing your practical skills in techniques such as gel electrophoresis, chromatography, spectroscopy, molecular cloning, and cell culture. The programme also develops quantitative and computational skills, reflecting the increasingly data-intensive nature of biochemical research. The sandwich year and placements might be in pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, hospitals, research institutes, or other organisations where biochemical knowledge is applied at a professional level. The year abroad broadens your perspective and adds an international dimension to your scientific training. Graduates from biochemistry programmes work in pharmaceutical research and development, biotechnology, clinical biochemistry, forensic science, food science, environmental science, and academic research. Many go on to postgraduate study, including PhD research in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or pharmacology.
