MA Archaeology and Gaelic Studies
About this course
Archaeology and Gaelic studies is a pairing that offers a uniquely Scottish lens on the deep history and living culture of Scotland. Archaeology investigates how people in the past organised their lives, built their communities, and interacted with the natural and social world through the material evidence they left behind. Gaelic is one of Scotland's three indigenous languages, with a literary tradition stretching back over a thousand years and an oral culture of songs, stories, and poetry that has shaped the identity of Highland and Island communities for centuries. Studying them together allows you to explore Scotland's past and its cultural heritage through both material evidence and language. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year, full-time programme combines archaeological training with the study of Scottish Gaelic language, literature, and culture, offering a genuinely interdisciplinary approach to Scottish identity, history, and material culture. You will develop skills in archaeological fieldwork and analysis alongside Gaelic language competence and engagement with the literary and cultural traditions the language carries. The combination opens access to Scottish-language sources that are inaccessible to those without Gaelic, enriching your archaeological understanding with insights from the linguistic and cultural tradition that the physical record cannot provide alone. Graduates are well-placed for careers in Scottish heritage, museums, archives, archaeology, Gaelic arts and media, community cultural development, education, and the public sector in Scotland, where Gaelic language competence is an asset valued in broadcasting, education, and community roles. Many continue to postgraduate study in archaeology, Scottish Gaelic, or heritage, and some pursue research careers in areas where the intersection of material culture and language is directly relevant.
