MA Theological Studies
About this course
Theological studies is the rigorous academic engagement with Christian theology in its historical, intellectual and contemporary dimensions. Theology is among the oldest of the university disciplines, and its methods of inquiry, including textual interpretation, historical reconstruction, philosophical analysis and comparative religious study, have shaped the development of knowledge across many fields. Studying theological studies gives you both a deep grounding in the Christian tradition and the analytical and interpretive skills to engage critically with fundamental questions about belief, practice, meaning and ethics. At the University of St Andrews, where theology is the founding subject of the university, this four-year full-time programme provides a thorough introduction to Christian theology, covering the history, belief, practice and implications of Christian thought from the early church to the present day. You will explore how Christianity is expressed and lived out in different parts of the world today, and you will engage with the distinctive challenges that modern secular culture presents to faith, as well as with how Christian theology responds to those challenges. The programme is inherently interdisciplinary, connecting theology to philosophy, history, literature, ethics and cultural studies. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different theological and cultural environment, broadening your perspective on the global dimensions of the Christian tradition. Graduates move into a wide range of careers, including ordained ministry, chaplaincy, education, social and community work, the civil service, journalism, international development and academic research. Many also pursue postgraduate study in theology, philosophy, ethics, religious studies or related fields. The analytical and interpretive skills developed on this programme are valued across many professional contexts.
