BSc Archaeological Practice with Professional Placement
About this course
Archaeological practice is fundamentally about recovering evidence of the past and making sense of it through rigorous, systematic inquiry. Archaeology is not confined to ancient civilisations: it examines human life across all periods through the physical traces people leave behind, from prehistoric settlements and burial sites to post-medieval industry and contemporary urban environments. Practitioners combine fieldwork skills with scientific analysis, drawing on techniques ranging from geophysical survey and stratigraphic excavation to osteoarchaeology and environmental sampling to build a picture of how people lived, what they believed, and how landscapes changed over time. At Winchester this four-year full-time programme puts hands-on experience at its centre. You will go out into the field to work on sites of genuine historic importance, learning to identify, record, and interpret archaeological contexts in real conditions rather than only in the classroom. Scientific techniques form a significant part of the curriculum, giving you a practical command of the analytical tools that have transformed the discipline in recent decades. The thematic scope is broad, taking you from prehistoric Europe through to the study of death and burial across different periods and cultures. A year-long professional placement is built into the degree, giving you structured experience inside the heritage and archaeology sector before you graduate. You will use this time to build a professional portfolio that demonstrates your competence to future employers, making the transition from study to work considerably smoother than a purely academic degree would allow. Graduates move into careers in commercial archaeology and fieldwork, heritage management, museum curation, local authority historic environment services, environmental consulting, and academic research. Many also go on to postgraduate study in archaeology, heritage studies, or related fields, building the specialist expertise that many senior roles in the sector require.
