BTh Theology, Mission and Practice
About this course
Theology is the systematic study of religious belief, scripture, doctrine, and the life of faith communities across history and in the present day. Mission refers to the various ways in which religious communities engage with the world, seeking to share their beliefs, address social needs, and participate in public life. Practice brings these together with reflection on how theological understanding is embodied in the actual work of ministry, pastoral care, community development, and professional roles within the church and related organisations. Studying all three together gives you both the intellectual foundation of academic theology and the practical preparation for Christian professional life. At Roehampton University, this three-year full-time degree develops your skills and knowledge for a variety of Christian professions that call for a deep understanding of theology and practice. A foundation year is available for those who need to build their academic foundations before entering the main degree. You will engage with biblical studies, church history, systematic theology, and ethics alongside the practical and missiological dimensions of Christian ministry. Roehampton's context in south-west London provides access to a diverse range of faith communities and social organisations that enriches the applied dimensions of the degree. Graduates from Theology, Mission and Practice programmes go on to careers in ordained and lay ministry, youth and community work, chaplaincy, education, and a wide range of roles in Christian organisations and charities. Many work in church-based settings at local, national, and international level, while others move into social care, education, humanitarian work, or inter-faith dialogue. The ability to think theologically, to communicate across different communities, and to lead organisations with integrity is valued in many public-facing roles beyond explicitly Christian contexts. Postgraduate study in theology, ministry, pastoral care, or social ethics is a natural continuation for those who want to deepen their expertise. The typical entry tariff is 88 points.
