BA Philosophy & Ethics and Religion Theology & Spirituality
About this course
Philosophy and Ethics alongside Religion, Theology, and Spirituality is a combination that takes some of humanity's deepest questions seriously as subjects of rigorous academic enquiry. Philosophy and ethics ask how we can reason clearly about what is true and what is right, examining the arguments and concepts that underlie both our understanding of reality and our judgements about how to act. Religion, theology, and spirituality study the beliefs, practices, texts, and communities through which human beings have sought meaning, moral guidance, and connection to something beyond the everyday. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme is set in a city whose religious and cultural diversity makes it an unusually rich environment for this kind of study. Liverpool's two iconic cathedrals, its long-established Muslim community, and its history of faith-based engagement with poverty, migration, and social justice give the academic material a living, contextual presence. You will study the wisdom, mysticism, and practices of major world religions including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism, alongside contemporary spiritual identities and secular ethical frameworks. Philosophy and ethics will develop your ability to analyse arguments rigorously, to identify hidden assumptions, and to reason carefully about moral complexity. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, grounding the intellectual content in practical and international experience. Graduates work in education, chaplaincy, the civil service, journalism, social work, counselling, interfaith dialogue, NGOs, and policy research. The ethical reasoning skills developed in philosophy are valued in healthcare, law, business ethics, and public administration. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, theology, religious studies, or ethics, developing their expertise for academic or professional roles in a field that is gaining renewed relevance in public life.
