BSc Applied Sport Science
About this course
Applied sport science brings the methods and findings of physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition to bear on the real challenges of human performance, whether in elite competition, rehabilitation, public health, or physical education. The word applied is important: this discipline does not merely study how bodies move and perform in the abstract, but asks how that knowledge can be used to help athletes improve, injuries be prevented and managed, and populations lead healthier lives. It is a discipline that demands both scientific rigour and practical intelligence, and its graduates are trained to work directly with athletes, coaches, and health professionals. Studying applied sport science at the University of Edinburgh, you will engage with a four-year programme in one of the UK's great universities, in a city with a rich sporting culture and strong research environment. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to experience sport science practice and education in another country, which broadens your understanding of how sport is organised and supported at elite and community levels in different cultural and institutional contexts. Your studies cover exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, nutrition, research methods, and the practical skills of performance testing and analysis, all within a framework that emphasises applying knowledge to real performance and health contexts. Graduates in applied sport science move into careers as strength and conditioning coaches, performance analysts, sport physiologists, sport psychologists (with further training), and exercise referral specialists. Roles in professional sport clubs and national governing bodies, national sport institutes, universities and research settings, fitness and health organisations, and the military and emergency services are all accessible. Teaching physical education in schools is another route that attracts many graduates. Postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, sports medicine, or psychology provides a route to specialist or clinical roles.
