BSc Biological Sciences
About this course
Biological sciences is a broad and varied discipline that encompasses the study of life in all its forms, from the molecular mechanisms within cells to the ecology of ecosystems and the diversity of species across the planet. It asks how living things are built, how they function, how they evolved, how they interact, and how they respond to their environments. Studying biological sciences at degree level means developing both a rigorous scientific foundation and the flexibility to explore the particular areas of biology that interest you most. At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time programme provides a thorough grounding in the major areas of biological science, from cell biology and genetics through to ecology and evolutionary biology, while allowing you to develop specialist knowledge in the areas you find most compelling. Laboratory and field skills are developed alongside quantitative and analytical abilities, giving you the practical competence that employers in research and industry expect. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study biology in a different institutional and ecological context. Entry typically requires around 184 UCAS tariff points. Studying a biological sciences degree can prepare you for a wide range of careers: these could be in research, industry, or academia. Graduates work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, environmental consultancy, conservation, food science, healthcare, education, science communication, and government agencies. The strong scientific training the degree provides also supports postgraduate study in specialised areas of biology, biomedical science, environmental management, or medicine.
