BSc Applied Medical Sciences with a Placement Year
About this course
Applied medical sciences is a discipline that bridges the gap between fundamental life science and clinical medicine, developing graduates who can apply scientific knowledge directly to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease. Rather than focusing narrowly on a single biomedical science, it gives you breadth across areas such as biomedical science, human physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and the scientific principles that underpin clinical practice. The applied emphasis means that scientific understanding is always situated in its healthcare context. At Swansea this four-year full-time programme includes a placement year, giving you extended professional experience in a clinical or research setting before you return to complete your final year. That placement is a distinguishing feature of the degree, ensuring that the science you study is connected to real healthcare environments and that you graduate with both academic depth and practical understanding. Across the programme you will study the foundations of medical and life sciences including cell and molecular biology, human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, and pathophysiology, alongside the clinical and scientific applications that connect those foundations to medicine. The broad foundation the degree provides also makes it suitable as preparation for graduate-entry healthcare programmes. Graduates of applied medical sciences work across a range of healthcare and biomedical settings. Clinical laboratory roles, biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology careers, healthcare management, and science communication are all accessible. The placement year significantly strengthens employability and often leads directly to graduate roles. Many graduates also use the degree as preparation for further study, including postgraduate conversion courses in physiotherapy, physician associate training, graduate-entry medicine, or biomedical research at MSc or PhD level.
