BSc Applied Biomedical Science
About this course
Applied Biomedical Science is the discipline concerned with the laboratory investigation of human disease and the biological processes that underlie health and illness, with an emphasis on direct application to clinical and healthcare contexts. Biomedical scientists analyse patient samples, develop diagnostic tests, validate new laboratory methods, and contribute to the evidence base that supports clinical decision-making across medicine. It is a field that demands both scientific rigour and a clear orientation towards the patients whose health the work ultimately serves. At the University of Bradford, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional scientific preparation before engaging with the main degree curriculum. You will study clinical biochemistry, microbiology, haematology, immunology, cellular pathology, and transfusion science, developing the theoretical understanding of the mechanisms of disease alongside the practical laboratory skills that the profession demands. Bradford's programme is designed with professional practice firmly in mind, preparing graduates for roles in clinical laboratories and supporting the pathway to HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist. Qualified Biomedical Scientists work in NHS hospital laboratories, independent diagnostic services, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, blood transfusion services, and research institutions. HCPC registration is required for most NHS clinical laboratory roles, and the degree provides the academic foundation for that pathway. Many graduates develop specialist skills in particular laboratory disciplines as their careers progress, and others move into research, laboratory management, education, or quality assurance roles. Postgraduate study in biomedical science, clinical research, or related fields is also available for those who want to deepen their expertise or pursue academic careers.
