BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science prepares you to work at the sharp end of urgent and emergency care, responding to medical emergencies, trauma, and acute illness in community and pre-hospital settings. Paramedics are highly skilled clinicians who make critical decisions independently, often in complex and high-pressure situations, and the science underpinning that role draws on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and clinical reasoning. The profession has expanded considerably in scope and recognition in recent years, with paramedics taking on roles that extend well beyond emergency response into urgent care, primary care, and specialist clinical practice. Swansea University's three-year full-time programme in paramedic science is designed to meet the standards required for registration as a qualified paramedic, combining academic study with substantial clinical placement experience. You will study the biological sciences that underpin clinical practice, including respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal systems, alongside pharmacology, trauma care, mental health emergencies, obstetric emergencies, and major incident management. Clinical placements are integrated throughout the programme, placing you in ambulance services and other healthcare settings where you will develop practical skills under the supervision of experienced professionals. The programme also develops your abilities in critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and professional communication, preparing you to practise safely and effectively in a demanding and evolving clinical environment. Graduates in paramedic science are qualified to register and practise as paramedics, working in ambulance services, emergency departments, urgent care centres, GP practices, and air ambulance services. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study and career progression into specialist clinical roles, advanced practice, management, and education within the health service.
