The role
What an ironing and laundry worker actually does, day to day.
The work is sorting and loading washing, operating washers, dryers and large presses, ironing and folding, and getting items ready to return clean and tidy. Care, speed and consistency matter, since items must come back undamaged and to standard, sometimes in large volumes to a deadline.
The work is physical, warm and on your feet, with lots of lifting, standing and repetitive movements, and pay usually starts around the minimum wage. It may be in a laundry, hotel or hospital, on shifts, or self-employed doing ironing from home for local customers.
No qualifications are needed and you learn on the job. It is a common entry-level role, and self-employed ironing services can be a simple way to build a small business from home.
