The role
What a housekeeper actually does, day to day.
The work is cleaning rooms, changing beds, replacing towels and supplies, hoovering and dusting, and making sure everything meets a high standard for the next guest or the household. Thoroughness, speed and a careful eye matter, especially in hotels where you have a set number of rooms to turn around to a deadline.
The work is physical and on your feet, with lots of lifting, bending and moving, and hours can include early starts and weekends. Pay commonly starts around the minimum wage, and the role can be in hotels, holiday lets or private homes, sometimes self-employed for several households.
No qualifications are needed and you learn on the job, following cleaning and safety standards. It is a common entry-level role, and experience can lead to head housekeeper or supervisory positions.
