The role
What a functional manager and director actually does, day to day.
As a functional manager or director, you lead a department - whether it's HR, operations, finance, or something else. You set goals for your team, decide how to reach them, and make sure your team has what it needs to do the work. You report to senior leaders about how things are going and what problems you've spotted.
You spend time with your team - having one-to-one meetings, reviewing how people are doing, and helping them improve. You watch the numbers to see if your department is hitting its targets and staying in budget. You also work with other departments to make sure projects run smoothly and everyone pulls together toward the company's bigger goals.
