Woodland ecology and conservation sits at the intersection of two of the defining challenges of the current century: climate change and biodiversity loss. Forests and woodlands are among the most biodiverse and ecologically significant habitats on earth, storing vast amounts of carbon, regulating water cycles, and supporting thousands of species of plants, animals, and fungi. Understanding how woodland ecosystems function, how they are threatened, and how they can be managed, restored, and protected is a body of knowledge of pressing practical importance. This four-year programme at the University of Cumbria combines ecological science with conservation practice, preparing you for professional work in woodland and forest environments. You will gain expertise in forest management, biodiversity assessment, and woodland conservation, spending time in commercial forests, ancient woodlands, and unique conservation habitats that give you direct experience of the environments and challenges you will encounter in your career. A sandwich placement, undertaken at a partnered institution in the third year, allows you to apply your learning in a real-world professional context, building the confidence and practical skills that employers in this sector look for. Graduates go on to work in forest and woodland management, conservation agencies, national parks, environmental charities, local authorities, government environmental bodies such as Natural England and the Forestry Commission, ecological consultancies, and research institutions. The combination of field skills, ecological knowledge, and conservation understanding the degree develops is directly applicable in a sector that is growing in importance and employment opportunity as the UK pursues its woodland restoration and net zero targets.
