About this course

Wildlife and conservation management is a field concerned with the practical and scientific work of protecting and sustainably managing wild animal populations and the habitats they depend on. It addresses one of the most urgent challenges of our time: the global biodiversity crisis driven by habitat loss, climate change, invasive species, and overexploitation. Wildlife managers and conservation practitioners work at the interface of ecology, land management, policy, and community engagement, combining scientific understanding of how ecosystems function with the practical skills needed to manage land, survey populations, and engage stakeholders. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this two-year, full-time programme provides a focused and practically oriented foundation in wildlife and conservation management, drawing on the exceptional natural environment of the Scottish Highlands as both a learning context and a case study. You will develop skills in ecological survey and monitoring, habitat management, species conservation, GIS, and the policy frameworks governing wildlife and protected areas in the UK and internationally. The programme develops your scientific literacy alongside the practical land management knowledge that conservation roles require. Graduates from wildlife and conservation management programmes work in conservation charities, wildlife trusts, national parks, government environmental agencies such as NatureScot, environmental consultancies, and land management organisations. Roles include countryside ranger, conservation officer, ecological consultant, species recovery officer, and land manager. The two-year structure provides a qualification that many graduates use as a foundation for further study, including progression to a full honours degree in ecology, conservation biology, or environmental management, or as a direct route into employment in the sector.
