BA Welsh, Theatre And Media
About this course
Welsh, Theatre and Media is a degree that places the Welsh language and its living cultural context at the centre of an engagement with performance and media practice. Welsh is one of Europe's oldest living languages, with a literary and theatrical tradition stretching from the medieval period to a vigorous contemporary scene in which Welsh-language television, film, theatre, and digital media all play significant roles. Studying Welsh alongside theatre and media prepares you for participation in that culture, both as a critical thinker and as a practitioner. At Bangor University, located in the heart of Welsh-speaking north Wales, you have the advantage of studying a language that is in daily use around you, and of engaging with media institutions and theatre companies that operate in Welsh as their primary language. This four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you a comprehensive programme of academic study, language development, professional experience, and international engagement. You will develop your Welsh language skills to a high level of proficiency while studying Welsh literature, culture, and history. In theatre, you will explore performance as a practice and a critical object, and in media you will engage with how Welsh-language content is produced, distributed, and received. The combination of language, performance, and media is particularly coherent in a Welsh context, where these fields overlap significantly. You will graduate with strong bilingual communication skills, practical media and performance experience, and a grounded understanding of Welsh cultural life. These are distinctive and valued capabilities in the Welsh creative economy. Graduates from this degree work in Welsh-language television, radio, theatre, digital media, education, journalism, arts administration, and cultural policy. Many find roles with S4C, BBC Wales, independent production companies, theatre companies, and arts funding bodies. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in Welsh, media studies, or theatre and performance.
