Visual effects and post-production are the disciplines that complete a film, television programme, or digital content piece after principal photography or capture has finished. Post-production encompasses picture editing, colour grading, sound design, and the finishing processes that shape the final audience experience. Visual effects extends this into the digital creation and manipulation of imagery, from compositing live action with computer-generated elements to entirely synthetic environments and characters. Together, they have become central to storytelling across film, broadcast, gaming, advertising, and emerging virtual and immersive media. This two-year full-time Foundation degree at the University of Suffolk, delivered through East Coast College in Great Yarmouth, gives you practical training in the tools, workflows, and creative processes that underpin professional post-production and visual effects work. You will learn to use industry-standard software and equipment, working on real production materials to develop skills in editing, compositing, grading, and effects work. The programme is based in a purpose-built higher education centre, The Place, which provides access to advanced technological systems including immersive media and virtual production facilities, areas of significant and growing demand in the industry. This practical, studio-based learning prepares you for a competitive industry where technical fluency and production experience are what employers and clients look for. Graduates of visual effects and post-production programmes work in television facilities, film studios, post-production houses, advertising agencies, gaming companies, and the expanding field of virtual and augmented reality production. Roles include editor, compositor, colour grader, motion graphics designer, visual effects artist, and post-production coordinator. The Foundation degree provides a platform for progression to a full bachelor's degree for those wishing to go further academically, or for direct entry into the industry for those ready to begin their professional career.
