BA Visual Effects and Motion Graphics
About this course
Visual effects and motion graphics encompass the technical and creative disciplines that bring impossible imagery to life in film, television, advertising and digital media. Visual effects, or VFX, creates imagery that cannot be captured on set, from digital environments and creature animation to explosive destruction and the subtle augmentation of real footage. Motion graphics applies animation and design principles to typography, branding, title sequences and information visualisation, making ideas move with intention and impact. At Teesside University this part-time programme introduces you to the foundational principles of animation, which underpin all moving image work, building from hand-drawn 2D techniques and the classic principles of timing, weight and character through to 3D animation using industry-standard software and methods. You will explore the history of animation and motion design from its earliest beginnings to contemporary styles, developing the contextual understanding that informs skilled practice. The curriculum covers the range of technical and artistic skills the industry demands, preparing you for professional work across multiple platforms and production contexts. Graduates of visual effects and motion graphics programmes work in film and television post-production, advertising, games, broadcast design, interactive media, online content and architectural visualisation. Roles include VFX artist, compositor, motion designer, 3D generalist, rigging artist and title sequence designer. The entertainment and advertising industries in particular rely heavily on these skills, and graduates who combine strong technical ability with creative problem-solving are consistently in demand. Postgraduate study in visual effects, animation or game art provides further specialisation for those who want to develop expertise at the highest professional level.
