FdSc Vision Rehabilitation Specialist (Adults)
About this course
Vision rehabilitation is a specialist healthcare discipline concerned with helping adults who have acquired a vision impairment to live as independently as possible. Sight loss can be caused by a wide range of conditions including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and many others, and its effects on daily life can be profound, affecting mobility, self-care, reading and communication, work, and social participation. Vision rehabilitation specialists work directly with adults with visual impairments to assess their functional needs, teach adaptive techniques and skills, and introduce low vision aids, assistive technology, and environmental modifications that help people maintain their independence and quality of life. At Birmingham City University, this two-year full-time foundation degree programme prepares you to become a Vision Rehabilitation Specialist practitioner. It is an applied, practice-focused programme that combines theoretical knowledge of visual impairment, its causes, and its functional consequences with the practical skills needed to assess clients, plan and deliver rehabilitation programmes, and support people to achieve their goals for independent living. You will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the eye and the visual system, the common causes and types of visual impairment, models of disability and rehabilitation, communication and counselling skills, orientation and mobility training, and the wide range of aids and technologies that can support people with sight loss. Practical clinical placement is a central component of the programme, giving you direct experience of working with clients in real rehabilitation settings under the supervision of qualified practitioners. This hands-on experience is essential for developing the professional competence and confidence that the role demands. Graduates from vision rehabilitation specialist programmes work in sight loss charities and voluntary sector organisations, NHS services, local authority social care, and private practice, providing rehabilitation support to adults with visual impairments. Further study can support progression to degree-level qualifications or to other healthcare and social care roles.
