BA Tourism and Events Management
About this course
Tourism and Events Management is a degree that studies two of the world's largest and most dynamic industries, examining how experiences are designed, delivered, and managed for diverse audiences in contexts ranging from international travel destinations to music festivals, corporate conferences, and major sporting events. Tourism is one of the world's largest economic sectors, accounting for a significant share of employment and GDP in many countries, while the events industry spans everything from small community gatherings to Olympics-scale productions. Both industries require managers who can work across logistics, marketing, finance, customer experience, and operations, often under intense time pressure and in environments where success depends on the quality of human experience. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this three-year full-time programme develops the management competencies and specialist knowledge needed to work in both sectors. You will study marketing for tourism and events, operations and logistics, financial management, visitor experience design, sustainable tourism, cultural and heritage tourism, and the planning and delivery of events of varying scale and type. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience and to study tourism and events in a different cultural context, and work placements are embedded in the degree. Newcastle itself is a city with a vibrant events calendar and a thriving night-time and cultural economy, providing a live context for much of what you study. You will develop practical project management skills alongside the strategic and analytical competencies that senior roles in these industries require. Graduates pursue careers in hotel and resort management, destination management organisations, festival and event production, conference management, airline and travel management, heritage visitor attractions, and tourism policy. Many go on to postgraduate study in tourism management, events management, or hospitality. The industries are genuinely global and offer career mobility across countries and contexts.
