BA Tourism and Events Management (Extended Degree)
About this course
Tourism and events management is a discipline that combines the strategic study of one of the world's largest industries with the practical management skills needed to plan, deliver and evaluate events of every scale and purpose. Tourism encompasses destination management, hospitality, sustainable travel, consumer behaviour and the economics of visitor economies. Events management addresses the design, logistics, marketing and operational management of anything from corporate conferences and sporting occasions to festivals, brand launches and community celebrations. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle this extended degree programme combines academic rigour with experiential learning drawn from the university's strong relationships with regional, national and international tourism operators, attractions and governing bodies. You will be tutored by researchers and practitioners who bring professional and research insight into the classroom, with live case studies, consultancy work, event organisation projects and guest speakers connecting your studies directly to industry. The programme runs over four years full time and includes a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you an unusually comprehensive combination of professional and international experience. Graduates move into careers in tourism management, destination development, hotel and hospitality management, event planning and production, airline and cruise management, cultural heritage organisations and international development bodies. The combination of tourism and events expertise is valued by employers who need graduates who can work across multiple aspects of the visitor economy. Postgraduate study in tourism management, hospitality, event management or sustainable tourism provides further routes for those seeking specialist expertise.
