About this course

Theology and religious studies combined with theatre studies brings together two disciplines that, at their deepest level, share a concern with meaning, ritual, and the ways human beings make sense of existence through enacted and symbolic forms. Theology and religious studies encompasses the study of religion, scripture, theology and ethics as they relate to politics, history, literature, philosophy, art and culture, as well as to personal belief and practice. Theatre studies examines performance as a human practice, exploring dramatic texts, performance theory, the history of theatre and the creative processes of making work for stage. At Glasgow, this part-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to pursue both strands of your degree in an international context. Part-time study allows you to develop your academic expertise while managing other commitments, and the year abroad broadens your exposure to both religious traditions and theatrical culture beyond the UK. You will engage with the full breadth of religious studies, examining Christianity, Islam, Judaism and other traditions alongside foundational theological and philosophical questions. In the theatre strand, you will read and analyse dramatic texts, engage with performance theory and develop your understanding of theatre as a cultural and artistic form across different historical periods and traditions. Graduates of theology and religious studies combinations bring an unusually deep understanding of culture, ethics, belief and human behaviour, which is valued in education, chaplaincy, public service, community development, arts administration, journalism and the charity sector. Theatre studies skills are relevant in education, arts management, community drama and cultural programming. Further study in theology, religious studies, drama or related fields is a well-supported option.
