About this course

Theology and religious studies with English language is a pairing that brings two rigorous analytical disciplines into productive conversation. Theology and religious studies encompasses the study of religion in all its dimensions, examining scriptures, doctrines, rituals, histories, and practices not as worlds apart from the rest of human life but as deeply connected to politics, history, philosophy, art, and literature, as well as to personal belief. English language study asks how language itself works, how it shapes thought and identity, how it varies across communities, and how it is used in communication, from everyday speech to literary prose. Together, the two disciplines develop acute analytical and interpretive skills. The University of Glasgow offers this four-year full-time programme with a year abroad option, giving you the chance to extend your academic experience at a partner university and engage with different scholarly and cultural traditions. The programme has a typical entry tariff of 200 points. You will study major world religions, theological traditions, and biblical texts alongside linguistics, discourse analysis, phonetics, and the history and structure of the English language. Both disciplines encourage close reading, careful argumentation, and attentiveness to context, and the combination produces graduates who are comfortable with complexity and nuance. Graduates with this combination of skills work in education, journalism, broadcasting, the civil service, church and faith-based organisations, international development, social research, publishing, and communications. The ability to interpret texts carefully and to communicate ideas about language, belief, and culture is valued across many professions. Postgraduate study in theology, linguistics, English language, or related disciplines is a common next step, as is teacher training.
