BEng Sustainable Process Engineering
About this course
Sustainable process engineering addresses one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century: how to design, operate, and optimise industrial processes in ways that meet human needs while minimising environmental harm. Chemical and process engineers design the systems that manufacture medicines, food, fuels, materials, and countless other products, and the discipline of sustainable process engineering asks how those systems can be redesigned to use energy and resources more efficiently, reduce waste and emissions, and operate within the limits of a finite planet. At Bradford this three-year full-time programme is designed to support your development across different competencies related to process engineering and sustainability. It includes a foundation year providing additional academic preparation for students who need it before advancing to the main degree. Throughout the programme you will engage in collaborative work, including design challenges, experiments, presentations, and industry projects, reflecting the importance of teamwork in both disciplinary and multidisciplinary engineering contexts. Real-life challenges underpin the curriculum, developing critical thinking alongside the technical knowledge of thermodynamics, mass transfer, reaction engineering, and process control that is central to the discipline. Graduates go on to careers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, energy, food, and water industries, as well as in environmental consultancy and engineering management. The emphasis on sustainability within the programme makes graduates particularly well placed for roles in the growing fields of clean energy, waste reduction, carbon management, and industrial ecology. Professional registration as a Chartered Chemical Engineer through the Institution of Chemical Engineers is a natural ambition for many graduates, and many also continue to postgraduate study in process engineering, environmental engineering, or related fields.
