BSc Sustainable Development with a Year Abroad
About this course
Sustainable development is a discipline built around one of the defining challenges of our time: how can human societies meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs? It brings together environmental science, economics, political science, and social theory to examine the complex relationships between ecological systems and human development. The field is inherently interdisciplinary, recognising that challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, food insecurity, and inequitable resource distribution cannot be understood or addressed from within a single academic tradition. This four-year full-time programme at the University of East Anglia with a year abroad is grounded in rigorous science while also engaging with the economic, political, and social dimensions of sustainability. You will study environmental processes and ecological systems alongside the frameworks of sustainable development, including the governance structures, policy instruments, and social movements through which change is pursued. The year abroad places you in an international academic environment, giving you exposure to sustainability challenges and approaches in different national and regional contexts, and broadening your perspective on the global dimensions of the issues you study. With a typical entry tariff of 120 points, the programme attracts students who are scientifically curious and motivated by real-world environmental and social questions. Sustainable development graduates are well prepared for a wide range of careers in the environmental, public, and private sectors. Environmental consultancy, conservation and natural resource management, climate policy, international development, and corporate sustainability are all significant employment areas. Government agencies, NGOs, international organisations, and private companies with sustainability responsibilities all employ graduates from this field. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree also prepares you for roles in research, science communication, and environmental education. Postgraduate study in environmental policy, sustainability, climate change, or international development is a natural progression for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into research and leadership roles. The urgency of the global sustainability transition means that the skills and knowledge this degree develops are increasingly in demand.
