About this course

Sustainable development addresses one of the defining challenges of our time: how human societies can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It sits at the intersection of environmental science, economics, politics, and ethics, asking how we can manage the transition to a world that is both ecologically sustainable and socially just. The discipline engages seriously with climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, food insecurity, and the political and economic structures that sustain or undermine environmental and social wellbeing. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year, full-time BSc prepares a new generation of graduates to address these pressing environmental and social issues. You will develop knowledge of the natural systems that underpin human life alongside the social, economic, and political frameworks through which sustainability challenges are understood and addressed. The programme draws on Edinburgh's research strengths in environmental science, geography, and social sciences, giving you access to cutting-edge thinking in a field that is evolving rapidly. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to encounter sustainability challenges and responses in another national and ecological context. Graduates of sustainable development programmes are in growing demand across the public, private, and third sectors. Careers in environmental policy, sustainability consulting, international development, corporate environmental responsibility, NGOs, research, and public administration are all accessible. Employers increasingly look for graduates who can combine scientific understanding with policy awareness and the ability to engage diverse stakeholders on complex, contested questions. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sustainable development, environmental management, climate policy, or related fields, contributing to the knowledge and practice that a more sustainable future requires.
