BSc Strength and Conditioning
About this course
Strength and conditioning is the applied science of developing physical performance in athletes and active individuals, using evidence-based training methods grounded in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sport science. Practitioners in this field design and deliver training programmes that improve strength, speed, power, endurance, and movement quality, helping athletes perform at their best and reducing the risk of injury. The discipline draws on a substantial and growing body of research, and effective practitioners need to be both scientifically literate and practically skilled. At Brighton, this three-year full-time programme develops your scientific understanding of how the human body responds and adapts to physical training, alongside the practical coaching and programming skills you need to work effectively with athletes and other populations. You will study exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, monitoring and testing methods, and the design of periodised training programmes. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are built in, giving you structured professional experience in sport and conditioning settings, from professional sports clubs to health and fitness environments. Brighton's sport science facilities support practical learning throughout the programme. Graduates are prepared for careers with professional sports organisations in football, rugby, athletics, and other sports, as well as in settings including occupational fitness, healthcare rehabilitation, education, and recreational sport. The field is supported by a professional accreditation framework through the UK Strength and Conditioning Association, and the degree provides a strong foundation for professional recognition. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in strength and conditioning, sport science, or physiotherapy, and some pursue research careers in applied exercise science.
