HND Sports Therapy
About this course
Sports therapy applies the principles of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics to the prevention, assessment, and management of musculoskeletal injuries in physically active individuals. It is a clinical and applied discipline, distinct from sports science and from physiotherapy, focused on enabling athletes and active people to recover from injury safely and return to performance. Practitioners need both rigorous scientific knowledge and the hands-on clinical skill to assess injuries, design rehabilitation programmes, and work effectively in sport and exercise environments. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this programme in sports therapy is studied part-time, making it accessible alongside existing commitments such as work or caring responsibilities. You will study anatomy and musculoskeletal physiology, injury assessment and management, sports massage, rehabilitation planning, and the acute management of injuries, developing the knowledge and practical skills that underpin professional sports therapy practice. The Highlands and Islands setting offers a distinctive context for sports therapy, with opportunities to work across rural, outdoor, and community sporting environments alongside the programme's clinical content. Graduates of sports therapy programmes work with sports clubs and teams, in private clinics, with national governing bodies, and in leisure and fitness settings. Those who achieve professional accreditation through the Society of Sports Therapists are eligible to practise independently as sports therapists. Many graduates also go on to further study in physiotherapy, sports medicine, or rehabilitation science, using the sports therapy qualification as a platform for advanced clinical specialisation.
