HND Sports Therapy
About this course
Sports therapy applies the principles of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics to the prevention, assessment, and management of musculoskeletal injuries in physically active individuals. It is a clinical and applied discipline, distinct from sports science and from physiotherapy, focused specifically on enabling athletes and active people to return to performance safely. Practitioners need both rigorous scientific knowledge and the hands-on clinical skill to assess injuries, design rehabilitation programmes, and work effectively in performance environments. This programme at the University of the Highlands and Islands is an accelerated two-year full-time degree, allowing you to complete the qualification more rapidly than a standard three-year programme while covering the core content of sports therapy practice. You will study anatomy and musculoskeletal physiology, injury assessment and rehabilitation, massage and manual therapy, exercise prescription, and the acute management of injuries in sport. The Highlands and Islands context offers a distinctive combination of rural and outdoor sports settings alongside the programme's core clinical content. Graduates of sports therapy programmes work with sports teams, in private clinics, with national governing bodies in sport, in leisure and fitness settings, and increasingly in occupational health and active rehabilitation. Those who pursue professional accreditation through the Society of Sports Therapists are eligible to practise independently as sports therapists. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sports medicine, or rehabilitation science, using the sports therapy qualification as a platform for further clinical specialisation.
