BSc Sports Coaching
About this course
Sports coaching is a discipline that sits at the intersection of sport science, education, and applied psychology. Effective coaching is not simply about knowing a sport; it is about understanding how athletes develop, how to design learning environments that produce improvement, how to motivate and communicate with people under pressure, and how to evaluate and adapt your own practice. Whether at elite performance level or in community settings where sport is used to engage and develop people, coaching requires both technical knowledge and the human skills to deploy it effectively. At Edge Hill this three-year full-time degree combines theoretical grounding with substantial practical experience. The programme is underpinned by research in sports science, pedagogy and psychology, ensuring that the coaching approaches you learn have an evidence base. You will study athlete development, coaching methodology, performance analysis, sports psychology, leadership, and the governance and ethics of sport. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you extensive real-world coaching experience across different settings and levels. That practical exposure is central to the degree, and graduates typically find themselves well prepared for employment from the moment they finish. Sports coaching graduates work across a wide spectrum of environments. Performance coaching roles in professional sport, national governing bodies, and elite academies are one pathway. Community sports coaching, school sports partnerships, local authority sport and health programmes, and third-sector organisations using sport for social impact are another. Many graduates also move into sports development, physical education, strength and conditioning, and sports management roles. Those wishing to specialise or move into research or higher-level practice often continue to postgraduate study in coaching science, sport psychology, or physical education and youth sport.
