BSc Sports Business Management (with foundation year)
About this course
Sports business management brings together the commercial and organisational skills of a business education with detailed knowledge of the sports industry as a specific and distinctive sector. Sport is a major global business, encompassing professional clubs, governing bodies, events management, broadcast rights, sponsorship, merchandising and a growing grassroots and participation economy. Managing these organisations effectively requires both the general competencies of a business graduate and an understanding of what makes sport different, including the emotional relationship between fans and clubs, the regulatory frameworks of governing bodies, and the commercial dynamics of broadcasting and sponsorship deals. At Hartpury University, this five-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which gives you time to develop the academic and commercial foundations you need before progressing into the full degree. The programme is designed with a strong practical orientation, with modules and assessments designed in line with industry needs and employability built throughout the curriculum. You may find yourself leading assessment centre exercises or pitching business ideas as part of your studies, with the support of the university's employability and careers team. A placement year gives you direct professional experience in the sports industry, and work placement opportunities are integrated throughout. Graduates of sports business management programmes work across the full range of organisations in the sports sector. Professional clubs in football, rugby, cricket and other sports employ business management graduates in commercial, marketing, operations and events roles. Governing bodies, sports charities, leisure and fitness companies, sports agencies and media organisations working in sport are also common employers. Many graduates go on to build careers in sports marketing, sponsorship sales, facilities management or sports development. Postgraduate study in sports management or business administration is a further option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
