BSc Sport & Physical Education (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Sport and physical education are disciplines that sit at the intersection of science, education, and social practice. Physical education is concerned with how movement, activity, and sport are taught and experienced in schools and other settings, and with the role they play in health, development, and wellbeing across the lifespan. Sport studies, meanwhile, examines sport as a social and cultural phenomenon, considering its organisational structures, its relationship to identity and community, and its place in public life from grassroots participation to elite competition. At Liverpool Hope University this four-year full-time programme gives you a grounding in both the practical and theoretical dimensions of the field. You will explore how sport and physical education affect individuals and society at multiple levels, from the experiences of young people in school sport programmes to the organisational dynamics of elite sport and the contribution of community activity to public health. The programme uses both practical and theoretical methods, developing your ability to design, deliver, and evaluate physical activity and education programmes, as well as your analytical understanding of the contexts in which sport operates. A foundation year is part of the programme structure, providing additional academic support and preparation before degree-level study begins. A sandwich year gives you the opportunity to spend a sustained period in a professional placement, developing practical skills and industry experience. Work placement and a year abroad are also available, ensuring that real-world engagement is woven through your degree rather than being confined to a single block. Graduates move into careers in physical education teaching (typically following a PGCE), sports coaching, sport development, community sport and health promotion, sports management, leisure and fitness management, and performance analysis. Postgraduate study in sports science, physical education, public health, or sports management is a well-travelled route for those who wish to specialise further.
