BSc Sport Coaching
About this course
Sport coaching is the professional practice of facilitating learning and development in athletes and participants at every level of sport, from grassroots participation through to elite performance. Effective coaching draws on knowledge of physiology, psychology, pedagogy, biomechanics, and sports science, but it is also a deeply human activity that requires communication skills, empathy, the ability to build trust, and sensitivity to the diverse needs of different athletes. The discipline asks how people learn movement skills, how motivation and mental resilience are developed, how team dynamics are managed, and how coaching practice can be made more inclusive and effective. At Northumbria University at Newcastle, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year with work placement, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you a rich combination of professional experience and international exposure. The sandwich year and placements are central to the programme's approach, allowing you to develop and apply your coaching skills in real sporting environments before completing your studies. Northumbria has strong connections to professional sport and community sport organisations in the north-east, and the programme benefits from a coaching environment that is both academically rigorous and practically orientated. Graduates work as professional coaches across a wide range of sports and levels, including youth development programmes, club coaching, national governing body roles, university sport, school sport, and professional and semi-professional organisations. Sport development officers in local authorities and national bodies, physical education teachers (with a further teaching qualification), strength and conditioning coaches, and performance analysts are other roles that sport coaching graduates pursue. The year abroad opens international coaching opportunities, and some graduates build careers working with sports organisations in Europe, North America, or further afield. Postgraduate study in sport coaching, sport science, or sports psychology provides a route to more specialist or senior roles.
