BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences with Foundation
About this course
Sport and exercise science applies biological, psychological, and biomechanical knowledge to understanding human performance and physical activity. It is a discipline grounded in research and measurement, asking precise questions about how the body works under exercise, how performance can be improved, and how physical activity contributes to health and wellbeing. The field encompasses physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition, and strength and conditioning, and its findings inform practice from recreational sport to elite competition. At the University of Gloucestershire, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year that introduces you to the core sciences and study skills needed to succeed at degree level, making it an accessible entry route for students who have not yet completed traditional A-level science qualifications. As you progress through the programme you will develop a rigorous understanding of exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, motor control, sports nutrition, and performance analysis, alongside practical skills in laboratory measurement, data analysis, and applied coaching and testing. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you extended professional experience in sports environments. Students have previously secured roles with elite clubs, gaining hands-on insight into professional environments that give real context to your academic learning. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates from sport and exercise science programmes go on to careers as performance analysts, strength and conditioning coaches, sport development officers, exercise physiologists, personal trainers, sport scientists working with professional clubs and national governing bodies, and health and exercise practitioners in clinical settings. Further study options include postgraduate programmes in sport science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, and physical education teacher training.
