BSc Sport and Exercise Science (Physical Education and Coaching)
About this course
Sport and exercise science with a specialism in physical education and coaching applies the scientific study of human movement, physiology and psychology to the practical work of teaching and developing athletes. Physical education is concerned with how young people are introduced to movement, sport and physical activity in educational settings, with both the pedagogical and the scientific dimensions of delivering effective PE. Coaching focuses on the systematic development of athletic performance, drawing on exercise science to plan training, develop skills and support athlete wellbeing at all levels of participation. At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route before you progress into the main degree. You will develop a scientific understanding of how the body responds to training and exercise alongside practical skills in planning and delivering physical education and coaching sessions in line with national standards. The programme emphasises confidence in implementing a range of teaching, learning and coaching approaches, as well as the ability to support athletes in performing at their potential while managing injury risk. You will develop both as a science-literate practitioner and as an effective communicator in sport and educational settings. Graduates from sport and exercise science programmes with a PE and coaching specialism work as PE teachers following a PGCE or School Direct placement, sports coaches, strength and conditioning practitioners, community sport development officers and physical activity specialists in health settings. Many work within schools, community sport organisations, sports clubs, elite academies and local authorities. Postgraduate study in physical education, sport coaching, sport science or strength and conditioning is a common pathway for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into more senior performance or education roles.
