BSc Sport and Exercise Science
About this course
Sport and exercise science is the systematic application of the natural sciences to the study of human movement, physical performance, and health. It brings together exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sports psychology to ask how the body responds to physical demands, how performance can be enhanced through training and nutrition, how movement can be made more efficient, and how sport and exercise can contribute to lifelong health. The discipline has grown rapidly as the evidence base for exercise as medicine has expanded and as professional sport has become ever more data-driven in its approach to performance. At Manchester Metropolitan you will study this programme part time and via distance learning, giving you the flexibility to engage with sport and exercise science alongside work or other commitments. Distance learning means your study is not geographically constrained, though MMU's established expertise in sport and exercise sciences provides the academic rigour and research-informed content that underpins the programme. Across your studies you will develop grounding in the core areas of the discipline, including physiology, biomechanics, and psychology, alongside the research methods and data analysis skills that scientific practice demands. The part-time, distance learning format is particularly suited to those working in sport or fitness who wish to develop formal academic credentials. Sport and exercise science graduates work across professional and community sport, health and fitness, rehabilitation, public health, and research. Roles include sport scientist, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, sports coach, and community health promotion specialist. The flexibility of the part-time distance learning route means many graduates are already working in relevant roles and use the degree to advance within those roles or move into more specialist positions. Postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, clinical exercise science, or sports medicine is a common next step for those wishing to specialise further.
