MSci Speech and Language Therapy
About this course
Speech and language therapy is a healthcare profession dedicated to assessing and treating the communication and swallowing difficulties that can arise from a wide range of causes, including stroke and acquired brain injury, learning disabilities, autism, developmental language disorders in children, and degenerative neurological conditions. Speech and language therapists work with individuals across the lifespan, from babies with feeding difficulties and children with delayed language development to adults who have lost the ability to communicate following illness or injury. The work is both scientifically grounded and deeply personal, requiring rigorous clinical reasoning and genuine compassion. This four-year integrated master's degree at the University of Keele combines the academic and clinical learning needed for professional practice. You will develop the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills of the discipline, learning to assess communication and swallowing function, formulate clinical hypotheses, and design and implement evidence-based intervention. The integrated master's format means that by the time you graduate you will have achieved a higher level of scholarly depth and clinical competence than a standard three-year programme provides. Keele's programme is taught by practitioners and expert researchers, connecting you to current clinical and scientific understanding throughout the degree. A typical entry tariff of 104 UCAS points reflects an accessible admissions standard for a demanding professional programme. Graduating qualifies you to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a speech and language therapist, enabling you to practise in the NHS, private practice, educational settings, and care organisations. Many graduates develop specialisms in areas such as paediatric language, acquired neurological conditions, or dysphagia, and some continue to postgraduate research.
