BA Specialist Sports Journalism
About this course
Sports journalism sits at the junction of two large industries, sport and media, each of which has undergone dramatic transformation in recent years. The growth of digital platforms, social media, and live streaming has changed how sports news is produced and consumed, while the globalisation of major sports leagues and the rise of data analytics have changed what sports journalists write about and how they obtain their stories. Specialist sports journalism is not simply reporting results; it involves investigation, analysis, feature writing, broadcasting, social media production, and the development of the critical understanding of sport as a cultural, economic, and social phenomenon that separates good sports journalism from mere fandom. At the University of Derby, this three-year programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year with work placement, and a year abroad, giving you an unusually rich combination of academic grounding, professional experience, and international perspective. The foundation year builds the media and communications foundations needed to enter the degree at the level required. The placement year gives you substantial experience in a media organisation, and the year abroad opens you to different sports cultures and journalism traditions. Throughout your studies you will develop writing, broadcasting, and digital production skills alongside the contextual understanding of sport, media law, and media ethics that professional sports journalists need. Graduates of sports journalism programmes move into roles across the full range of media organisations: newspapers, magazines, websites, broadcasters, and social media operations. Positions include reporter, producer, presenter, editor, and social media manager, with opportunities in both traditional newsrooms and the growing digital content teams of sports clubs, governing bodies, and sports marketing agencies. Sports public relations and communications offer related roles for those who wish to work more closely with clubs and athletes. Postgraduate study in journalism or media is an option for those seeking further credentials or a specialist research direction.
