About this course
Spanish and German is a combination that gives you proficiency in two of Europe's most widely spoken and commercially significant languages, opening access to the literature, history, and cultures of a large and diverse range of countries and communities. At the University of Glasgow, this MA programme runs over five years of full-time study and includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you professional experience alongside the intensive language and cultural education the degree provides. Glasgow's staff cover a wide range of topics in Spanish studies, and you will have the opportunity to work with native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world. The Spanish strand of the programme develops your proficiency from your current level to a high standard of competence in both spoken and written Spanish, engaging simultaneously with Spanish and Latin American literature, film, history, and contemporary politics. Spanish is the official language of twenty nations across three continents and is spoken as a first language by some five hundred million people, making it a language of enormous global reach. The German strand offers comparable depth in a language central to European political and economic life, with engagement with German literature, culture, and contemporary society as well as linguistic training. Studying both languages simultaneously develops a distinctive cognitive flexibility and multilingual awareness, and the sandwich year and work placement give you the professional context in which to apply your skills.
