About this course

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world by native speakers, the dominant language of the Americas outside Brazil, and one of the most important languages for international business, diplomacy and cultural exchange. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time degree develops your Spanish language skills to the highest level of professional fluency alongside a deep engagement with the literature, culture and contemporary societies of Spain and Latin America. A sandwich year and work placement are built into the programme, giving you direct experience of working in a Spanish-speaking or international professional context alongside the year abroad that is central to serious language study. You will develop all four language skills to advanced professional level, reading widely in Spanish literature from medieval texts through the Golden Age and the Generation of 98 to contemporary authors, and engaging with film, music, journalism and popular culture alongside canonical literary works. Glasgow's Spanish staff cover a wide range of topics and include native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, giving your study breadth and authenticity. The five-year structure gives you the time to achieve genuine depth in both language and cultural understanding. A typical tariff of around 232 points reflects the competitive entry and the demands of the programme. Graduates pursue careers in international business, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, education, the civil service, international development, cultural institutions and academic research. The combination of high-level Spanish and the professional experience gained through the placement and year abroad makes Glasgow Spanish graduates genuinely competitive for roles that require linguistic fluency and cross-cultural competence. Many graduates proceed to postgraduate study in Hispanic studies, translation, international relations or law.
