About this course

Spanish at Queen's University of Belfast immerses you in the languages, literatures, histories, and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, from the Golden Age literary traditions of early modern Spain and the colonial societies of Latin America through to the contemporary cultures of twenty-first century Spain and the diverse and vibrant societies of modern Latin America. The programme welcomes students at beginner level, so prior study of Spanish is not required, and all students follow core language modules that develop spoken and written proficiency and translation skills alongside their literary and cultural studies. This four-year full-time degree includes a year abroad. You will develop practical language competence through systematic tuition, building from beginner or intermediate level to genuine proficiency, while simultaneously engaging with a wide range of historical and cultural material that contextualises the language within the societies that speak it. Literary study introduces you to major authors, texts, and movements from across the Spanish-speaking world, while cultural and historical modules give you a deeper understanding of the political, social, and artistic contexts in which Spanish has been spoken, written, and contested. The year abroad is a central part of the programme, giving you the immersive experience in a Spanish-speaking country that is essential for developing true fluency and cultural understanding. A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects a moderately selective admissions standard. Graduates from Spanish programmes at Queen's pursue careers in translation and interpreting, journalism, teaching, international business, the diplomatic service, publishing, tourism, cultural organisations, and the many other fields in which Spanish language competence adds significant professional value. Many continue to postgraduate study in Hispanic studies, linguistics, translation, or area studies.
