About this course

Spanish and Ukrainian is a pairing that brings together two languages with very different origins, geographies, and contemporary significance. Spanish is one of the world's most widely spoken languages, with more than 500 million native speakers across Europe and the Americas, and it carries literary and cultural traditions of global reach and importance. Ukrainian, an East Slavic language spoken by more than 40 million people, has come to global attention as a language of enormous political and cultural significance, as Ukraine has asserted its distinct national and linguistic identity in the face of sustained pressure. Studying both together at University College London gives you access to two very different but equally important linguistic and cultural worlds. This four-year joint honours programme divides equally between Spanish and Ukrainian. You will study speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both languages, developing genuine communicative competence alongside deep cultural and critical understanding. Your modules will range across literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in both language communities, with a wide variety of options available to tailor the degree to your particular interests. In the third year you will spend time abroad split between two countries where your languages are spoken, giving you the extended immersion in each language that is essential to reaching genuine fluency and cultural familiarity. Graduates with expertise in Spanish and Ukrainian alongside strong analytical and communication skills are well placed for careers in translation and interpreting, international diplomacy, journalism, broadcasting, international development and humanitarian work, academic research, and cultural organisations. The combination is particularly distinctive given Ukraine's current international prominence. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in linguistics, translation, Slavic studies, Hispanic studies, international relations, or area studies.
